Drive File Stream: Access Loads Of Data Without Breaking The ProcessThe main problem with electronically stored data is that our computers don’t have enough storage and processing space. For instance, a medium-sized company may get to have up to 500GB of data in a very short period of time and as the amount gets bigger, the processing power gets weaker. After all, have you tried to perform a search in 500GB of data with a regular computer? It’s absolutely ludicrous! Most small and medium size enterprises (SME's) don’t cover collaboration or remote working very well. Even those using Google Drive often have a hybrid onsite to cloud solution where some of the documents are processed in the cloud with Google Docs and Google Sheets. Still, they often need to access other data that can’t be edited in the cloud which needs to be brought down to the desktop to open in an application (eg. CAD designs, or Microsoft Office files). The solution to this was to use the Google Drive Sync tool which could sync everything or selected items in their My Drive down to the local computer to access easily. Businesses not using Google Drive often had Dropbox to do this. However, this often causes many IT issues such as:
- Computer hard drives filling up
- Slowness of Internet for the business as many computers are syncing files constantly
- Increased internet usage which can often be costly. Especially for laptops working off 4G mobile broadband. A few gigabytes sync can cost hundreds of dollars.
